The Radiological Study of Paranasal Sinusitis

Abstract
|
|
|
The author studied the radiological observation about the 989 cases of paranasal sinusitis, which visited the Otolaryngological. Department of Pusan National University Hospital during 5 years period (from Jan. 1965 to Dec. 1969).
The results obtained were as follows;
1. The 989 cases were diagnosed as the paranasal sinusitis radiologically. and it was 10% of all out patients(9242 cases) and 32. 9% of rhinological patients(3009 cases) in the otolaryngological department during same period.
2. The sex distribution showed 643 cases (65. 0%) in male and 346 cases(35. 0%) in female. 1.9:1 was the ratio between male and female.
3. The age distribution revealed 259 cases (26.2%) in the 15-19 aged group and 173 cases(17. 55.1) in the 20-24 aged group.
4. On the X-ray findings of the maxillary sinus, the diffuse homogenous density type was seen in 794 sides (45.8%), the mucosal thickening type in 622 sides(35.9%), the fluid level type in 209 sides (12.1%), and the polypoid type in 107 sides(6.2%).
5. Radiologically, bilateral maxillary sinusitis was 754 cases (77.1 %). Of these cases the same type in both sides was 505 cases (51.6%) and the different type was 249 cases (25.5%). maxillary sinusitis in one side was 224 cases(22.9%).
6. The 675 cases involved the maxillary sinus alone and 10 cases of ethmoid and 1 case of frontal sinus. The maxillary sinusitis combined with another sinusitis was 303 eases(30.6%). Of these cases, the maxillary sinusitis with ethmoiditis was 270 cases (27.3%)
